The new year is here, and everyone is trying to keep their resolutions and make the changes in their life as they look into the future. But is anyone leaving any time for God? Is anyone desiring to be in God’s Word more in the new year, and set aside time for God to speak to you.
Jesus said in John 8:31-32, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
I wanted to quick give you some thoughts to help you pursue God’s word in 2016
SET A PLAN
When approaching God’s Word, what is your plan? When will you read? For How long? Where will you read (yes location is key for some of us)? Are you trying to read through the New Testament, or the Entire Bible in 2016? Without a plan, distractions and life priorities overcome and the good intentions to be in God’s word get pushed to the back burner. Pick a plan before you start.
Here are some good reading plans that you could use.
PRAY BEFORE YOU READ
Reading God’s word is not like reading a book from the library, or a textbook. God wants to speak to you. Pray before you read. Ask God to give you the Humility to receive what God is saying to you, and the Faith to apply God’s word to your life. Ask God for his Holy Spirit to speak directly into your heart and your life.
GO TREASURE HUNTING
When you read, have a pen or a highlighter or a crayon (great for highlighting thin page bibles) ready when reading. Look for things in the text – like God’s Power, For what it says about the world we live in, for His Commands for our lives, For how people responded to God and what Jesus is saying and doing. Expect God to show you new things about who is Is and how we should live (Eph 1:16-19). Have a journal ready to write what God is speaking to your heart. Take your time. Don’t rush it.
SHARE THE JOURNEY
Devoting yourself to reading God’s word is an amazing journey. Share the journey with someone else. Ask a close friend or a spouse to also read. Keep each other accountable. Encourage one another, and share how God spoke to your heart. Also, maybe you read something that God wants you to share with someone you will contact that day. Let the Holy Spirit guide you.
HAVE THE PROPER TOOLS
Having the proper tools are very essential for all things, especially for reading the word. Here are some tools.

:: Logos Bible App – Great Bible app for your phone and or tablet that builds word study & commentary into your reading.

KEEP JESUS IN FOCUS
Everyone approaches reading the Bible a little different. The key is to allow Jesus to reveal himself to all of us, and to allow him to lead our lives as we seek to Follow Him in 2016.
